CAMP PENDLETON, CA – A pair of wildfires were spreading across open terrain at Camp Pendleton Monday, sending plumes of brown smoke over northern San Diego County but posing no threats to populated areas, authorities reported.
One blaze sparked Monday afternoon in a training area at the Marine Corps installation north of Oceanside, according to the Camp Pendleton Fire Department. The second blaze involved remaining areas of combustion from a fire that burned over the weekend.
The flames are not threatening any structures on the base or in surrounding communities, officials said.
“We would like to put our neighbors at ease who are seeing smoke,” officials said. “Rest assured that there is currently no threat to any structures or surrounding communities.”
No details on the sizes of the burn areas or the causes of the fires were released.
