Something different for the holidays is sprouting in Carlsbad: A new production of the lyrical musical “The Secret Garden.”
New Village Arts revives Lucy Simon and Marsha Norman’s adaptation of the children’s novel about an orphan who helps bring new life to a dreary English estate — and makes some magical discoveries along the way.
Rosina Reynolds directs the 1991 favorite, which won a Tony Award for Norman’s book.
Musical director Tony Houck will conduct a string quartet in the performance of the score by Simon, who’s the sister of the pop singer-songwriter Carly Simon.
Sara Mahaffey makes her NVA debut as Mary Lennox, the orphan who sets the story in motion; the show also includes NVA newcomers Jacob Farry as Colin, Samantha Rose Steinberg as Lily Craven, and Samantha Vesco as Martha.
Also in the cast: Chris Bona as Dickon, Kevane La’Marr Coleman as Albert, Devin Collins as Ben Weatherstaff and Major Holmes, Kelly Derouin as Rose, Manny Fernandes as Dr. Neville Craven, Dagmar Krause Fields as Mrs. Medlock, Nadia Guevara as Ayah, David S. Humphrey as Archibald Craven, and Tanner Vidos as Lt. Wright.
“The Secret Garden” runs right up to Christmas Eve.
