2017-18 Port Chester Rams
Coach — Tom Josephson

Entering third season as head coach

How did you team do last season? Our dual meet record, including dual meet tournaments, was 7-20. We placed 23rd in the section.

Who are your top returning wrestlers? Ivan Garcia won the section at 99 and placed fifth in the state last year as a freshman. Brayan Mendez (113 last year as a sophomore) is our only other returning sectional qualifier. Seniors Angel Gutierrez (106 last year), Chris Ortiz (120 last year), Kevin Poblano and Eric Magana (both 138 last year) should be steady contributors all season. I’m hoping for good campaigns from sophomores Alberto Lagunes (106 last year) and Sebastian Rangel (120 last year). Sebastian qualified for sectionals as an 8th grader (106), but missed divisionals under concussion protocol last year.

MEET THE CHAMPS: Port Chester’s Ivan Garcia

SECTIONALS: Garcia captures first title

Who are the top wrestlers you lost to graduation? Brandon Defreitas (220) and Merlin Gonzales (126).

What is the strength of your lineup? We’re going to be solid from 106 through 152.

Are there any holes you’re concerned about filling? We’ll have some untested talent from 160+ but it really depends on where certifications fall and who makes weight where.

Which wrestler is the best technician on your team? After Ivan, I’d have to say Brayan Mendez. Working out with Ivan on a daily basis really helped Brayan develop last year.

Who is the most gifted athlete? Our senior captain Kevin Poblano.

Who is the toughest and most determined? We have a lot of mentally tough kids on this team, so I’ll answer that by giving a shout out to the four who did the most off-season wrestling: Ivan Garcia, Brayan Mendez, Andy Mejia and Kevin Poblano.

Good luck to all of Section One this season.

On deck: Arlington

We’ll be posting at least one of these per day leading up to the start of the season. Coaches, if you did not receive a capsule email and would like to participate, please fill out the questions above and e-mail your answers to vmercoglia@lohud.com.
